This project integrates landscape architecture, lighting, and on-site public interaction to reimagine the relationship between traditional places of worship and contemporary urban life in Taiwan. Construction strictly followed a non-invasive principle: custom-developed clamps were engineered for partial fixing, ensuring the lighting installation could be completed without damaging the structural fabric of this 274-year-old, officially designated historic monument dedicated to Mazu, a principal deity of Taiwanese folkbelief—reflecting the highest order of respect for protected architecture.

Replacing conventional general illumination with precisely controlled sources, we used calibrated colortemperatures, narrow-beam optics, and accent spotlights to direct the viewer's gaze toward stonecalligraphy carvings, wooden architectural members, and deity-statue details. The result is a ceremonial, dignified spiritual space that restores the authentic chromatic depth and tectonic beauty of the heritage building, including its swallowtail ridges (yanwei ji), koji-pottery ornamentation, and intricately carved wooden components.

At the urban-design scale, our priority was social enrichment. The dim, idle water-tower yard behind the temple was transformed through projection lighting, illuminated spherical seating, and natural bamboo elements into a vibrant new node for community recreation and exchange—eliminating night-time blind spots and safety concerns while turning an underused space into a genuine public asset.

Community engagement is further driven by a "New Living Faith Design" framework that recasts the temple as a multifunctional public platform. Through a dedicated faith-based brand identity, curated markets, an in-house publication, and reinvented festival rituals, we break the aging-demographic bottleneck of traditional belief systems, enabling younger Taiwanese to engage meaningfully with this centuries-old monument.

By coupling architectural lighting as a visual medium with structured social programming, the project establishes a robust cross-generational dialogue mechanism. Through the reconstruction of light, shadow, and place, a historic temple becomes a faith node carrying both contemporary aesthetic value andgenuine social currency—offering a benchmark for the contemporary revitalization of traditional Asiantemple architecture.
